El Correo was founded in 1910, and is an independent, Spanish-language daily
which has traditionally supported an understanding between the Basque Country
and Madrid. Its circulation was 126,000 in 2005. The owner is Diario El Correo
Its editorial positioning, championing the middle ground in separatist questions, has angered the Basque separatist group ETA. The El Correo offices have been attacked by ETA on a number of occasions. In one attack in March 2001, some 20 petrol bombs were thrown at its offices in Bilbao.
Most of its readers are middle and upper class.
