Owned by Baigorri Argitaletxea SA, the circulation is not verified, but they claim 50,000 copies daily.

The Gara is a Basque and Spanish language daily, which took over from the daily Egin, when that paper was closed down by the anti-terrorist judge Baltasar Garzon in 1998 on charges of aiding the banned separatist group ETA.

Gara describes itself as having been "born out of circumstances marked by the closure of Egin". It still maintains an openly nationalist, anti-Madrid stance, but is more muted than Egin was.
