ABC Newspaper, Spain

Diario ABC is a Spanish newspaper that was founded in Madrid on January 1, 1903. ABC started as a weekly newspaper but became a daily paper in June 1905. Its circulation in 2005 was 277,000 copies per day. ABC is the third largest newspaper in Spain, and the oldest living newspaper in Madrid. It is owned by Prensa Espanola

ABC is known as a staunch supporter of the monarchy. It was seized in 1936 by Frente Popular (Popular Front) during the Spanish Civil War. Oddly during the civil war ABC published two different versions, one from each ideological side. One edition was published in Madrid backing the republicans and another in Seville supporting Franco's forces. When the war was over, ABC in Madrid returned to its original owners and once again became the largest newspaper in Spain.

Today the paper claims to be independent, but it has been a consistent supporter of the Popular Party, advocating the politics of a "modern, reformist and European centre-right".
